Winner 2009 - National/International Award For Outstanding Contribution To Maternal & Child Health
To honor an individual who through his/her life and work has made a significant contribution having a national or international impact upon the health and welfare of mothers and infants through leadership in education, research and national priorities.

Dr. Hani Atrash

Dr. Atrash has been an outstanding advocate for pregnant women's and infants and reproductive health. He has devoted his career to women and infant's health care and research and has developed several nationally recognized programs in maternal and child health.

Dr. Atrash led the CDC activities on Safe Motherhood, maternal and child health epidemiology, preterm delivery, and maternal and infant health surveillance and research. He established CDC's pregnancy mortality surveillance system, the CDC/ACOG Maternal Mortality Study Group, the Annual Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Conference, and the national Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Awards. In 2001, Dr. Atrash joined the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities as Associate Director for Program Development where he coordinated and led activities related to global health, workforce development, women's health, relationships with national organizations and state and local health departments, and minority health.

Dr. Atrash has spearheaded the CDC initiative on Preconception Health and Health Care. Dr. Atrash has authored and co-authored over 150 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, reports, and book chapters. He is well known in the United States and internationally and is well respected for his work and expertise.
