NVP Access to Treatment

Join the NPA in supporting pregnant women's access to safe and effective treatments

About the Issue

As a multidisciplinary organization focused on perinatal issues, many of our members treat and care for pregnant women. Our goal is to provide pregnant women with the highest level of care for both them and their unborn child.

Over the past year, we have been advocating for pregnant women by reaching out to health insurers and State Medicaid Agencies (SMAs) that are delaying appropriate access to the only FDA-approved Category A therapy for Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (NVP) and requiring pregnant women to first fail on other medicines – none of which are indicated for the treatment of NVP.  For more information about NVP please click here.

This practice, known as step therapy with forced-off label prescribing, often prolongs suffering when access to appropriate medications is delayed and may subject patients to unintended consequences associated with exposure to medications that may not have been well studied for use in treating a particular medical condition. Many of our partners provide additional information on this issue. Please visit the following for more details:

We are asking partners to add their names to the letters the NPA will submit to the appropriate SMAs, private insurers and Insurance Commissions in the states identified.

We also encourage you to write your own letter, post on Facebook or Tweet about this important issue affecting pregnant women across the country. The more voices heard, the better chance women will have access to the right care and treatments.
